The Cancellation of 9th_Asia_Group_2_Meeting 2009 in Thailand.

Dear Vincentians,

Referring to the announcement of the National Council of Thailand postponing the 9th Asia Group 2 Meeting to 4-6 July 2009 and requesting member countries to register for participation in the meeting within 30th May 2009.

Even though the political situation in Thailand has currently returned to normal, the Local Organizing Committee is aware that the member countries are concerned Thailand still cannot presently find a permanent solution for reconciliation among the Thai people. Although, the National Council of Thailand is prepared to organize the 9th Asia Group 2 Meeting, we are concerned about the benefits which will be obtained by all and if it would be worthwhile if the meeting is attended by only a few member countries. Australia has just informed us of their cancellation and will not participate in the meeting. On the other hand, if before or during the meeting, an unexpected political crisis might occur it may result in a cancellation or interruption of the meeting, causing great inconvenience and worry to the member countries participating in this meeting as well as to The National Council of Thailand.

The Local Organizing Committee has considered this matter at great length and it is with our greatest regret that we have to announce the cancellation of the 9th Asia Group 2 Meeting to be held in Thailand. Therefore, we would like to invite another member country to host this meeting instead of Thailand. Bro. Michael Thio, Bro. Brian O'Reilly, Bro. John Lee, and Bro. Thomas Tan acknowledged the decision and asked for prayers from all of us.

The National Council of Thailand deeply regret for any inconvenience this has caused to you and all your delegates/participants. For those countries who have remitted the registration fees, we will refund the amounts we have received later.

We are facing with a real problem of Global Warming partly caused by industrial and agricultural sectors exploiting nature, military strategy in producing nuclear weapons, war chemicals and other fatal weapons for self-defence or for intrusion or for wealthy, different types of disasters with increasing trend of frequency and severity due to changing world climate. Oil crisis or in other words, cost of gasoline boosts up beyond its ceiling with no hope of stopping or dropping to its previous level. Substitute energies have been developed at a very high cost still. Cost of living rises up tremendously. Rice and all necessity items become expensive far beyond expected and experienced. All afore-mentioned issues confirm that the world is changing in a worried way. The more worried is the political situation in our country. We are obviously divided into two opposite poles. There are mobs, abuses, and fighting.
Sawasdee Krupp to Vincentians and all respected readers. From the above introduction, there is no intention to create more pressure or worry than what currently be, but wish you all to realize the fact in order to have self-consciousness and to be self-sufficient following the advice of our adored King for the appropriate solution to live our lives according to the Gospels.
· To know how to control one’s behavior according to one’s financial status.
· To be generous and share what we have with others starting at home, with our neighbours, at the educational institute or at work place, in our society and in our beloved country. This is due to the fact that “Giving causes more happiness than receiving”.
You are invited to react to the Global Warming, to the economic & financial problems, political and social problems, to the increasing selfishness by sharing, giving, having more patience, and loving each other with the help and guidance from our prayers and The Word of God. This is not to change the world but to change ourselves and our attitudes towards all people around us for a better world which can be improved for a pleasant stay still.

President General Visiting Thailand

On 16-20 September 2008, Bro. Jose Ramon Diaz-Torremocha, President General together with Bro. Jean Fernand Tirado, his personal assistant and Bro. Thomas Tan, SSVP Asia Group II Coordinator had visited SSVP Thailand. Upon the first day of arrival, Bro. Suraphol, National President of SSVP Thailand, brought them to pay homage to Micheal Cardinal Meechai Kitbunchu at Bangkok Archdiocesan Bishop Office located at Soi Oriental.

In the evening, National Council had arranged a welcome dinner and up screen the presentation briefing of our SSVP activities in Thailand. On the second day of their visit, the team had brought them to St.Louis Home for the Aged in Lamsai, which is run by SSVP Thailand together with St. Paul De Chartre Sisters under St Louis hospital’s support. There are 27 of elders living there. After visiting the new site of Home for the Aged located nearby, the lunch was prepared at Daughters of Charity Provincialate House, one of our FAMVIN members. The whole afternoon were spent at Dindaeng slum area under our Lady of Fatima Conference’s guidance. The third day, flew directly to Krabi province visiting the project- site set up for Tsunami victims, of which, CGI had given financial assistance to build shelter for the homeless from this disaster. The project had been supported by the Society together with the Sacred Heart of Jesus Sisters from Bangkok. The team had brought them further to visit St.Agnes Vocational Center which is run by Rev. Fr. Pornchai Taechapitakthum, the church pastor of St. Agnes in Krabi province. The Society had given financial assistance to support the vocational project especially for providing the victims with training and know-how in computer and tailoring.

The Vincentian Family (FAMVIN)
On Saturday 20th September 2008, the FAMVIN group which comprises of Congregation of the Mission (CM), Daughters of Charity of St.Vincent de Paul (DC) , International Association of Charities (AIC), Association of the Miraculous Medal (AMM) and SSVP, The Archdiocese of Bangkok had jointly offered a thanksgiving mass to celebrate St.Vincent de Paul’s Feastday at Our Lady of Mercy Church, Nonthaburi province. After the service, the group had arranged luncheon activities for 90 children at St. Martin Child Development Center. There were altogether 80 members took part in the celebration.

FAMVIN Meeting
In August 2008, SSVP was the host for the FamVin meeting and one of the agenda was to ask the branch of FamVin to arrange the liturgy hand book for the celebrated Mass of Asia Group 2 meeting. Daughters of Charity Sisters will assist to make it as requested

Myanmar Cyclone Relief Fund
In September, National Council had remitted 30,000 Thb (583.45Eur) as relief fund to help Myanmar Cyclone Nagis victims. The fund had been transferred via CGI in France. Donation letters had been sent out to each Diocesan Council President asking for contributions from members to help the victims.

Self-Help Projects
Water tanks Project
The Conference of the Holy Trinity, Chiang Khong, Chiang Rai Province requested fund support to build cement water tanks to store up mountain water for use during dry season. The hill-tribe villagers: Lahu, Hmong and the group of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception had cooperated to set up a program for the hill- tribe children development . About 50 children and 35 families are in need of drinking water. During the dry season their families had to travel very far to fetch the water. The total cost to build such tanks was THB 60,000, the Conference would contribute THB 10,000, and the balance of THB 50,000 was requested. National Council was to seek fund support from our Twinning Conference in Australia. The request received support by members of the National council. For safety reason, Council member had also advised to stack up the cement tank at 4 or 5 rings vertically at the highest.

The Conference of Mother of Perpetual Help at Baan Kheknoi, Amphur Khowkor, Petchaboon Province, requested fund support for 12 villagers for THB 30,000. The fund would be used in buying blankets, rice, dried food, and necessary medicine and as well as repairing the living quarters for the orphans, the aged, and those poverty that the community had deserted them. The Conference would contribute THB 3,000 and the rest of THB 27,000 was requested. National Council was to seek fund support from kind benefactors. The matter had been considered during the meeting and members agreed to support.

Expansion and Spiritual Renewal Project
Head of the Expansion and Spiritual Renewal Project of The National Council, planned to visit St.Joseph church in Baanpong, Ratchaburi, aiming to go over several plans and boosted the renewal of Vincentian works. Currently, the church is publicly seeking those who desire to join the work of the society.

Overseas Twinning
In this quarter, the translator had translated 18 English to Thai letters and 31 Thai to English letters. Sisters and Brothers in St. Vincent, please be noted that those correspondences should include your view (about your works) and tell your twinning Conference what had happened in your area such as flood, drought, environmental changes and others etc..

Domestic Twinning
National Council had forwarded twinning fund of the 3rd Quarter/2008 to members in up-country amounting to 44,160THB for 64 conferences in total, each conference would receive 690THB.

Vincentian’s Youth
A) International Vincentian Youth Study Day
On 4-8 June 2008, our youth representative from Thailand, Sr. Theresa Rawipan Sridokchan, had joined The International Vincentian Youth Study Day at Salamanca, Spain. There were totally 130 participants from 110 countries joining the function. The major discussi scholarships on at the meeting could be divided into 4 topics: 1. Vincentians’ work and self-adaptation in the moderm world, such as, inviting youths to participate more in Vincentians’ activities as well as dealing with self-adaptation towards new forms of poverty. 2. Spirituality of being Vincentians 3. SSVP’s Rules , and 4. Co-operation among Vincentian Youth and Vincentians in each country, problems, threats, solutions and opportunities.
All youth participants joining the function had given full co-operation in all arrays of activities. They had shared ideas and varieties of useful experiences with one another. Most importantly, they intended to share and apply the knowledge obtained from this meeting to their own countries.

B) FAMVIN Celebration and World Youth Day 2008
On 9-14 July 2008, 4 Vincentian Youths from Thailand had traveled to Australia to join FAMVIN Celebration at Bathurst and participate in World Youth Day 2008 during 15-20 July 2008 in Sydney, Australia. His Holiness, Pope Benedict the XVI had touched down in Sydney to join the function and to meet with all youths coming from around the world.
FAMVIN Celebration 2008 was organized by SSVP Australia aiming to invite Vincentian Youths from every countries to exchange ideas and work experiences encountered in their countries. The activities included focus on Life and History of Saint Vincent de Paul, our Patron Saint of the Society, reviewing lives of related Saints and Founder of FAMVIN, pilgrimage walk around Bathurst , participated in the Cultural Night Show, of which many groups of Vincentian Youths gave performances based on their cultural backgrounds. The activities helped create unity among members participated in the function.

Assist a Student Project
Director of Assist a Student Project had remitted scholarship funds for the school year 2008 to 9 Diocesan Councils in up-country, 1,303 scholarships in total which accounted for 1,954,500 Thai Baht.. Each conference would receive 14 scholarships, each worth 1,500 Baht. Details are as follows:

2) The Diocese of Udornthani 22 conferences 287 scholarships 430,500 Baht

Fund Raising Project
Another fund raising activity planning to be organized next year would be “Charitable Walk Rally”. The project aims at generating revenue for the Society.

Diocese of Udornthani
During May-August 2008, President of Diocese of Udornthani, Br.Wasun, had participated in conference meetings of several districts for 8 times. In addition, several field surveys were carried out to assist flood victims at Paisithong Village, Viengcook Village, Donwai Village in Nongkhai Province.
On September 24th 2008, Mother of Perpetual Help Conference in Udornthani had organized a retreat for Vincentian members. On September 27th 2008, the aforementioned conference offered thanksgiving mass and distributed food for the aged to celebrate St. Vincent De Paul Feastday.

Diocese of Chantaburi
On March 17th , 2008, a new conference had been set up, namely ,Conference of Our Lady of Rosary , Sattahip, Cholburi Province. The president of the new conference is Bro.Suriyan Sawangchit, Vice President is Bro. Charoen Prasobsuk, Treasurer is Bro.Umnuai Panusri and Secretary is Bro.Songkram Arnarmpong.

Diocese of Chantaburi currently has 4 Vincentian Youth Conferences, namely, The Holy Name of Jesus Conference, Cholburi Province, St. Paul Conference, Rayong Province, St. Lawrence Conference, Baan Nagnarm Chachoengsao Province and Our Lady of Rosary Conference, Sattahip, Cholburi province.

The Archdiocese of Bangkok
On Saturday 26th July 2008, The Archdiocese of Bangkok had organized a retreat for Vincentian members at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, in Bangsakae District with 70 Vincentians from many conferences joining the program. Rev. Fr. Anusak Kijbamroong, Archdiocesan Council Spiritual Advisor, and Rev. Fr. Supakij Lertjitrlekha, Church Pastor were invited to give sermons and lectures.
On Sunday 24th August 2008, Conference of Saint Francis Xavier, Samsen, Bangkok had offered a thanksgiving mass celebrating the occasion of 55 years’ establishment of the conference at Saint Francis Xavier Church. Many Vincentians from other conferences in Bangkok had attended the service.

Asia Group 2 Meeting
SSVP Thailand has the honor of hosting Asia Group 2 Meeting 2008 which will be held in Assumption University, Suvarnabhumi Campus on 27-30 November 2008. The theme of the meeting is Evangelization : A True Vincentians’ Spirit. The meeting is being organized every two years’ time which consists of 9 member countries, i.e., Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Philippines and Indonesia. National Council members of the aforementioned countries had been invited to join the meeting. The objectives were to exchange ideas and work experiences in helping the poor, sharing goals and setting mutual directions for the future and updating news and the latest policies among delegates and members. Besides, it can also be taken as a good opportunity for members to renew their spiritual life of being true Vincentians. We had sent an honorable invitation to Bishops and priests who have high experiences in Vincentians’ work and evangelism to be our guest speakers. It is expected that the attendants for this meeting will be around120 people from 12 countries. The meeting is sponsored by SSVP Singapore, Australia and Catholic Business Executive Group ( CBEG), Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau Public Ltd. (TCEB) and Coca Cola (Thailand) Company, Ltd., who will support us with soft drinks during the meeting. Let us all SSVP members pray for the smooth and success of this meeting and may the Lord bless all donors and merciful-hearted people who have sacrificed their time and financial support anticipating for the occurrence of this fruitful meeting.

6:00 am 6 vincentians and 2 students , The working group went to visit SSVP in the middle of Thailand. We started from Fatima Church ,Bangkok.

8:30 am We arrived at St.Josep Church, Banpong, Nakornpatom province.

We met Father Supoj in front of the Church before joining Mass.

In the Mass, Father introduced SSVP work and invited to join SSVP.

After Mass ended, we had the meeting with the people of the church and introduced SSVP in Thailand to them.

12:00 pm We arrived at TarMuang Church but did not meet the Father of the church,

then we just walked around to see the surrounding of the church and left to Ta Wah

14:00 pm We arrived at Ta Wah and met Father Surapol Nuntapornpisut.

He organized 4 officers of the church to welcome us.

We also introduced about SSVP and asked them to set up Vin Cent there and the Father would give them fully support for the set up. He also suggested us that if we can coordinate to the Diocese of Bangkok, the Vincentian should work smoothly and would be distributed to all other churchs effectively.

on the way we met .... so mean arround is so nature :)

and we met Father Boonsong he setup SSVP in this Church since June2007 for now had 7 vincentian and we join the meeting with them.

and we back to Bangkok in 19 pm.

_ Additional appointment of National Council Members.
Taking the occasion that Bro. Suraphol Senavinin has been elected as the National President of SSVP Thailand for the year 2008-2009, the new National Council Members have been appointed as follows: 1. Sr. Nuttra Dulpicharn, 2. Sr.Thitikarn Nilkumhaeng, 3. Sr.Nattawan Bunpratum, 4. Br. Santi Sangnakorn 5. Bro. Trinity Boonyakitjakarn and 6. Sr. Nomchitr Subsaiharn. and 7. Sr. Duangjan Thavornvoramit. The name list of the new National Council members is posted under the topic of National Council Committee 2008-2009 In the National Council Meeting, a preparation of action plan of all Diocesan Councils for the year 2008 was recommended and should be submitted to the National Council in the next meeting.

_ Self Help Project

Bro. Francis Vivat, Director of Self Help Project reported that he had submitted 2 projects to BCTFN Foundation requesting for financial support as follows: 1. Digging Shallow Well Project at Conference of Saint John of Ban Prongyen, Nongkai province 08/2007, and 2. Improve the quality of drinking water (Water Filter) at Conference of The Holy Infant Jesus of Ban Paeng, Singburi Province 09/2007

_ Vincentian Youth Project

Sr.Sangduen Posai, the Director of Vincentian Youth reported that on January 14-16, 2008, 6 Vincentian youths from Australia have visited Thailand to study the activities of Vincentian youth and Vincentians. The National Committee includes Bro.Suraphol, Sr.Sangduen and Sr.Rawipan, offered a warm greetings at the airport and accompanied them to stay overnight at Daughters of Charity Provincialate House in Lumsai, Lumlookha, Pratumthanee Province. The team has brought them further to visit several sightseeing places such as Jitlada King’s Royal Projects, the Emerald Bhudda Temple in Bangkok. They even enjoyed participating in our charity’s bowling competition, yet visiting Baan Hathai Karun (Student Center), Vincentian Youth at Saint Anthony and Conference of Saint Paul in Chachuengsao province. They also visited Saint Louise Home for the Aged in Lumsai and HIV Hospice at the Garden of Gospel Peace run by Order of Franciscan Friars Minor, in Lamsai, Phratumthanee province. Other places include Conference of Vincentian Youth at Saint Nicholas School in Pitsanulok province, Conference of Holy Family, Klonglan, Kampang Petch province the purpose is to study the work for hill tribe project., Camillian Elderly Home Social Centre in Prachinburi province, Conference of Vincentian Youths at Panasnikom in Chonburi province, Conference of Saint Lawrence and visiting Lorenso Care Center for HIV children. Rice Mill Project at Bannangam, Chachengsao province, visiting Vincentian group and joining activity of helping the poor of the Holy Name of Jesus Conference in Cholburi and Orphanage home in Pattaya. Lastly, they have made a courtesy call to Bishop Lawrence Thianchai Samarnchit: the Diocesan Bishop of the Diocese of Chantaburi. Vincentian youths from Australia had been impressed with the warm welcome and all the places they had visited.

They were very much interested in the activities of Vincentian youths in Thailand and the Assist a Student Project which has been receiving support from Australia. Other Vincentian youths and Vincentians from many churches had also taken part in their visit to share with one another the ideas and experiences. Representative of Vincentian youths from Australia requested that each Diocese who has students receiving scholarships from Australia write a letter with their own handwriting, attach the photo and submit to Society of Vincent De Paul, Australia. Each Diocese will have to submit 3-5 letters. If students cannot write in English, the translation would be provided but it is required that the letter is written in their own handwriting.

_ Overseas Twinning

National Twinning Officer had given his report that his team had already received the twinned money 4/2007 and Sr. Theresa Vimon had re-forwarded the twinned monies to each twinned Conference. He has translated, so far, 24 Thai correspondences and 19 English correspondences. Each time when each twinned Conference have received the twinning money (and/or with grants given on special occasions) . One should write back and thank our Twinning Conference for the donations. Otherwise, this makes them think that their Twinning Conference has stopped operation because they have no news (from them). They might stop twinning with them or request for another new twinning. In general, the twinning monies will be arriving at 4 intervals in a year. When you reply, please do not forget to enclose a few photos so that the twinned Conference can stick your photos on the Church’s notice board, to tell their parishioners where their donations go.

_ Domestic Twinning

Sr.Sangduen, Director of Domestic Twinning has forwarded twinning funds of 4^th Quarter/2007 (Oct-Dec 2007) to members in up-country, 64 conferences, in total which will receive 1,000 Baht each in financial support for a total of THB 64,000.

_ Assist a Student Project

Bro.Teerapong , Director of Assist a Student Project had informed every Diocesan Presidents regarding the distribution of scholarships for the school year 2008 that each conference will receive 8 scholarships of THB1,500 each. The funding will be transferred by early May 2008 before school commencement. It is required that each conference submit the name of applicants by end of February at the latest. Besides, we had been informed by National Council of Australia, Bro. Peter Doug Walsh, that the scholarship campaign is now being carried out in Australia aiming to assist the Thai students. For this 2008 school year, an additional of 300 scholarships would be provided in addition to 400 scholarships already given each year. So, for this school year,
each conference would receive a total number of 14 scholarships. List of 700 student names would be given to National Council of Australia. The National Council of Singapore has given each year a total number of 125 scholarships.

_ Fund Raising Project

A charity bowling has been taken place at RCA Ratchada, Rama9, on Saturday 19 January 2008 as a fundraising events for the society aiming to help people in need. Sr.Vimol, the treasurer, concluded that of the total number of 41 teams, the net revenue generated is 110,670 THB. Bro. Wanchai, Director of Fund Raising Project expressed his appreciation to the committee for their effort to help running the project smoothly.

_ The Archdiocese of Bangkok

An annual election of the new President of the Archdiocese of Bangkok was set up during the meeting in January 2008. The result came out officially that Sr. Sangduen Phosai has been re-elected as the President of the Archdiocese of Bangkok for the period of 2008-2009.

_ The Diocese of Chantaburi

Bro.Rungsak and Br. Prasert reported that the Diocese of Chantaburi had welcomed Vincentian youths from Australia with great pleasure during their visit on 21-23 January 2008.

_ The Diocese of Udornthani.

In January 2008, Bro. Wasan together with the conference members visited Conference of Raphael, Tharbom, Loey province to work out problems, organize meeting and elect the new president of Immaculate Conception Conference Bannoisamliam, Khonkhan province, to replace the existing Br.Kriengsak who was going to resign. The new president is Sr.Wallaya Daphong At Conference of Ourlady of Rosary ViengKook Nongkai province. the Fishing Net Project has been followed-up and the remaining amount of 5,000 THB will reimburse to the Society by April 2008. The Farmer’s Bank project of Holy Redeemer Conference at Ban Pakmoo, Nongkhai province will set up another meeting to finalize the conclusion. The Rice Bank Project of Saint John Noimans Conference at Ban Phusawat, Nongkai province is subjected to cover up the investment by February 2008.

_ Asia Group 2 Meeting

Sr. Rawipan reported that the Asia Group 2 Meeting will be held at Assumption University (ABAC), Suwannaphum Campus on 27-30 November 2008. The Society has submitted an official letter to the Dean of ABAC to use the place for organizing the event. The request is well-responded by The Dean. The Society has set up the meeting agenda, issued an invitation letter to the guest speakers as well as letters requesting for sponsorships from various Catholic Organizations and donors. The letter inviting National Presidents and South East Asian Delegates-Group 2 members to join the meeting has also been issued.

_ FAMVIN MEETING

Bro. Francis Vivat reported that Thailand will host The FAMVIN meeting this year. The meeting is arranged in English and organized quarterly. The Daughter of Charity’s Sisters will help draft the Minute of Meeting in English. AMM branch of FAMVIN presented us with the two statues of Mother Mary for the purpose of prayer session at member’s house, at church or at
the meeting place. Each members agreed to rotate the statue to various Dioceses. Of the two, The National Council of Thailand owns one; the other is giving to the Diocese of Bangkok.
